It’s that time of year again, summer is in full swing and so is wedding season. Whether you're the bride, a bridesmaid, or a guest, you want to look your best. If you have struggled with thin hair you may be trying out hairstyles or even extensions to cover it, but there are healthier options for your hair.

With all the associated events, it can mean costly and harmful styling, up-dos and treatments. It can put a lot of stress on thin or thinning hair. Extensions, hair products, the heat and pulling from straightening or curling, and tight up-dos can do further damage to your hair and scalp than you realize. Avoid further damage and hair loss with some simple but beautiful ideas.

Tips for surviving wedding season without damaging your hair

1) Limited use of products
Teasing and volumizing products are a common trick for thin hair. Add in warm weather, and it can mean excessive hairspray and other harmful products. Try to find an alternative to weighing your hair down with hairspray or gels – or look carefully for products with minimal harmful ingredients.

2) Beware of extensions
Many stylists recommend extensions for thin hair, but these actually can cause further hair loss by pulling on the roots and follicles, even causing scalp scarring after long-term use.

3) Choose a looser, gentler style for the day
Tight hair styles can create excess pulling, which can damage your hair follicles. For women with thin or thinning hair or a sensitive scalp, consider some very on-trend and less damaging styles: soft braids, headbands to help cover hairlines, and ‘poufs’ to fill out buns are beautiful options.

4) Discuss your concerns with your hairstylist
There’s no reason to be embarrassed about your thin or thinning hair. Your stylist will have some suggestions to style your hair in ways that create volume and fullness. For a long-term solution, many women can improve the quantity and quality of their hair with treatment. Results are not overnight, but if you decide to, consider taking our Hair Assessment to learn if you could regrow your hair.
